
WIA program is funded through the county of San Bernardino’s Investment Board that focuses on building a local workforce and providing youth with vocational/occupational and educational training that leads to employment.
The PAL Center’s WIA Youth Program is a structured “hands on” program that is intended to assist low-income youth with serious barriers to employment, to become self-sufficient through vocational and educational training. The WIA program provides youth with structured curriculum and activities that help youth achieve academic and employment success. Opportunities include:
- Effective and comprehensive activities, including a variety of options for improving educational and skill competencies, and effective connections to employers
- Ongoing mentoring opportunities with adults committed to providing such opportunities
- Vocational/Occupational training leading to success in the workforce
- Incentives for recognition and achievement
- Opportunities and activities related to leadership development, decision-making, citizenship, and community service
- Paid Work Experience in various career ladder fields leading to unsubsidized employment
The following are WIA eligibility requirements:
- 18-21 years of age
- One or more of the following:
- Basic skills deficient
- High School Dropout
- Homeless, runaway or foster child
- Offender
- Parenting Youth
- Assistance needed to complete educational program, or to secure employment.
- Low-Income
- Receive public assistance
- Poverty line or 70% lower living standard income level
WIA Serves:
- Youth who can, with assistance, reasonably be expected to
- Attain high school-level reading and math skills
- Attain a high school diploma or its equivalent, an industry-standard certificate, or a post-secondary degree
- Be successful in unsubsidized employment and/or post-secondary education or advanced training
